Will Jacks: England Win 6 of 7 Games to Reach T20 World Cup Semi-Finals Without a Perfect Game

Will Jacks has insisted England do not need to play a perfect game to win the 2026 T20 World Cup after Harry Brook’s side qualified for the semi-finals having won six of their seven matches — and Jacks himself claimed his fourth Player-of-the-Match award of the tournament in a thrilling last-over victory against New Zealand at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. England are in the semi-finals and Will Jacks says the results are all that matter.

“No One Really Cares” About the Perfect Game Will Jacks

Asked directly whether England need to produce a perfect performance to claim the title for the second time in four years, Jacks was refreshingly blunt. “Well, short answer is no,” he said. “We’ve won six out of seven games and we’ve qualified for a semi-final. At the end of the day no one really cares.

We obviously want to play well in there, but we’re not gutted that we haven’t played the perfect game because we’re winning. And that’s T20 cricket, that’s professional sport. It’s also incredibly hard to do that.”

Will Jacks went on to explain why seeking perfection against elite opposition is a near-impossible standard to hold yourself to. “You’re playing against a very strong side who have prepared as well as you, and they know what they’re trying to do and they’re also trying to play the perfect game.

So the chances of that happening are very slim. What we’ve done well is, in the key moments, we’ve kept a calm and clear head and we’ve managed to negotiate those well.” It is a philosophy that sits at the heart of this England T20 side’s tournament approach pragmatic, composed, and ruthlessly focused on winning the moments that matter most rather than obsessing over the ones that do not.

Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed’s Match-Turning Partnership Against New Zealand

England’s win over New Zealand was anything but comfortable. Chasing 160 for victory, Brook’s team found themselves in another precarious situation needing 43 runs from the final three overs when Rehan Ahmed came to the crease alongside Jacks. Jacks admitted he was nervous entering that passage of play, particularly having seen Sri Lanka’s batters struggle on the same Premadasa pitch against New Zealand’s spinners just two nights earlier.

“I knew that was a big task,” Jacks said. “We’ve seen the Sri Lanka game two nights ago on this pitch and how well New Zealand were bowling, and I watched how our batters were finding it having bowled on it myself. I knew that was a lot of runs. So I knew we needed to do something special.

” The turning point came in the 18th over bowled by Glenn Phillips. Rehan charged at the offspinner on just the second delivery and launched him for six a moment Jacks described as the shot that changed everything. “That ball that Rehan hit, a six on the second ball, that gave me energy as well. And I thought, right, we’ve got a chance here. And then obviously I finished the over 6, 4, 4, and we were on.”

Twenty-two runs came from that Phillips over in total, and England were suddenly the favourites in a contest that had looked in the balance for most of the second innings.

Will Jacks reflected on the significance of the moment beyond the runs themselves. “I think small moments like that are so important and not just the runs but the way it happens hitting a big six and really showing the bowler that you’re on here and we believe that we can win this is really crucial. And from that moment I think the mindset changed.” England sealed victory with three balls to spare.

England Top Group 2, Head to Mumbai for T20 World Cup Semi-Final

Having topped Super Eights Group 2, England now travel to Mumbai where the second semi-final will be hosted at the Wankhede Stadium. Their opponent barring an unlikely set of results from the final Super Eights Group 1 match will be determined by Sunday’s contest between India and West Indies. Both represent formidable challenges, and both Jacks and Brook confirmed they are unconcerned which side they face.

“It would be massive, yeah,” Will Jacks said. “Everyone knows about India and the storyline that that brings. It could also be the West Indies and they’ve beaten us in Mumbai, so we know how tricky that’s going to be. We’ll be watching their game Sunday and we’ll see the outcome. We’ll be prepared and I think we’ll go into it with optimism and excitement.”

Brook’s View: Wankhede Experience Is an Advantage

England captain Harry Brook offered a similar note of calm confidence when reflecting on the semi-final prospect and the return to Wankhede, where England played two group matches including their tournament opener against Nepal. “We’re not bothered,” Brook said. “We’ve just got to go out there and whoever we’re facing, they’re going to be a tough opponent anyway. We’ve already played against West Indies at the Wankhede already, so a little bit of experience there.

It’s nice to go back to a ground that we’ve already played on as well. Both sides are very strong, very powerful teams and we’ve just got to go out there and try and do the little things well again.” Will Will Jacks and England go to Mumbai not as a perfect team but as a winning one, and in T20 cricket, that is the only thing that ultimately counts.
