McIlroy Confirms Apology After Fan ***** and Focuses on Race to Dubai Glory
Rory McIlroy PGA of America apology made headlines as the Northern Irishman confirmed that PGA of America CEO Derek Sprague had personally apologized after McIlroy and his wife Erica were subjected to abusive behavior from some US fans during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage. McIlroy revealed that a beer can was thrown at his wife, calling the incident unacceptable but admitting it ultimately “galvanised” the European team on their way to a 15-13 victory.
McIlroy Says ***** United Europe
McIlroy, who partnered Shane Lowry in some of the most hostile sessions, said the experience only strengthened team spirit. “The heckling fired us up. I took it as a backhanded compliment,” he said. Lowry holed the crucial putt that ensured Europe could not be beaten, and McIlroy praised his teammate’s composure: “Shane kept us in it when the crowd was at its loudest.”
Sprague had promised to reach out to McIlroy following the tournament, and the world number 2 confirmed the apology came soon after the European victory. “Derek was lovely about it,” McIlroy said. “He wanted to make sure we were okay and that the PGA would work on improving fan conduct.”
Rory Reflects on His Best Season Yet
The Ryder Cup capped what McIlroy called “the season of my life.” The four-time major champion completed the career grand slam by winning the Masters, and also triumphed at the Players Championship, Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the Irish Open. “This year has been beyond special,” McIlroy reflected. “I’ve achieved dreams I’ve had since I was a kid.”
Looking Ahead: Race to Dubai Showdown
Now turning his focus to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the DP World Tour Championship Dubai, McIlroy is aiming for a record-equalling seventh Race to Dubai title. He leads the standings narrowly ahead of England’s Marco Penge, with Tyrrell Hatton still in contention. “I remember trying to win my first Race to Dubai in 2009 against Lee Westwood,” McIlroy said. “I’m sure Marco feels the same pressure now. It’s going to be an exciting couple of weeks.”
McIlroy added that he relishes returning to the Middle East, where his 2025 campaign began at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. “It feels like things have come full circle,” he said. “I just want to finish the year strong and enjoy every minute.”
European Team Spirit and Moving Forward
Despite the unpleasant Ryder Cup crowd incidents, McIlroy insisted the team remains focused on the positives. “We want to remember Bethpage for the golf, not the noise,” he said. “The support from our fans was amazing, and the unity in our team was something special.”
With a PGA of America apology, multiple trophies, and another Race to Dubai title within reach, McIlroy’s 2025 season stands as one of the finest in modern golf history.
