Ronchi and Oram Set for PSL Coaching Roles
New Zealand coaches Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram are set to take up coaching duties with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, despite the tournament overlapping with New Zealand’s international commitments.
Ronchi, who serves as New Zealand’s batting coach, has been appointed as the head coach of Islamabad United. Former New Zealand all-rounder Oram, currently the bowling coach for the national side, will join the franchise as one of Ronchi’s assistant coaches for the upcoming season.
The decision means both coaches will be involved in the PSL even though the tournament begins shortly after New Zealand’s home T20I series against South Africa and overlaps with their limited-overs tour of Bangladesh.
New Zealand Support for Coaching Opportunities
New Zealand Cricket has supported the move, stating that allowing coaches to gain experience in franchise leagues can benefit the national setup in the long term.
Performance manager Mike Sandle explained that international coaching opportunities help staff broaden their knowledge and develop their skills in different cricket environments.
He said the experience gained in leagues such as the PSL can later be applied to the Black Caps setup and contribute to the development of players and coaching strategies within New Zealand cricket.
Sandle also highlighted that coaches, like players, are increasingly in demand around the world due to the rapid growth of franchise competitions.
Replacement Coaches During International Series
With Ronchi and Oram unavailable during certain international assignments, New Zealand Cricket has arranged temporary replacements for the upcoming series.
During the five-match T20I series against South Africa, which runs from March 15 to March 25, Wellington coach Jonny Bassett-Graham and NZC network coach Graeme Aldridge will join the national team’s support staff.
They will work alongside head coach Rob Walter and assist the team during the series.
For the subsequent tour of Bangladesh, Canterbury coach Brendon Donkers will step into the support staff to cover the absence of Ronchi and Oram.
The Bangladesh tour will include three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals, although the exact dates for those fixtures have yet to be confirmed.
Islamabad United Reunion for Ronchi
The PSL role also represents a return to familiar territory for Ronchi.
The former wicketkeeper-batter previously played for Islamabad United for three seasons after making his PSL debut in the 2017-18 edition of the tournament. During his time as a player, he became a key figure for the franchise and was part of their successful campaigns.
His appointment as head coach marks a new chapter in his association with the team as he transitions fully into a leadership role within the coaching staff.
PSL 2026 Schedule and Overlap
The 2026 edition of the Pakistan Super League is scheduled to begin on March 26 and will feature matches across several cities in Pakistan.
The timing of the tournament means Ronchi and Oram will finish their duties with the New Zealand team during the South Africa series before joining Islamabad United for the PSL.
However, their participation in the league could still overlap with New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh depending on the final schedule of the matches.
Despite the scheduling challenges, New Zealand Cricket believes the arrangement will benefit both the coaches and the national team.
Strengthening New Zealand’s Coaching Depth
New Zealand Cricket also views the temporary changes in coaching staff as an opportunity to strengthen its domestic coaching network.
By bringing in coaches from regional teams such as Wellington and Canterbury, the national setup can provide valuable experience to a wider group of coaching professionals.
Sandle noted that working with international players and staff would help these coaches develop their own expertise and bring valuable insights back to domestic teams.
The approach reflects New Zealand Cricket’s broader strategy of building depth not only among players but also within its coaching system.
As global franchise leagues continue to expand, the experience gained from competitions like the PSL could play an important role in shaping the future of coaching and player development within New Zealand cricket.
