Why Rinku Singh Left India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

According to multiple reports citing BCCI sources, Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchand Singh, is battling fourth-stage liver cancer and is currently on ventilator support at a hospital in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Rinku had travelled to Chennai with the rest of the Indian T20 World Cup squad on February 23, the day after India’s deflating loss to South Africa. However, early on the morning of February 24, Rinku made the deeply difficult personal decision to leave the squad and return home to be with his family during this critical and emotionally draining time.

Rinku Singh was conspicuously absent from India’s practice session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium under lights on the evening of February 24 the first major public indication that something serious had happened within the Indian camp. A BCCI source confirmed to PTI: “Rinku Singh has flown back home from Chennai due to a family emergency.” The 28-year-old left-handed batter’s T20 World Cup fate now depends entirely on developments back home regarding his father’s condition and recovery.

Rinku Singh’s Lean T20 World Cup 2026 Campaign

Rinku’s departure comes at an already turbulent period in both his personal life and his T20 World Cup campaign. The Uttar Pradesh batter had a difficult time in the group stage, scoring just 6 runs against the USA in his T20 World Cup debut, followed by 1 against Namibia and 11 not out against Pakistan. Against South Africa in the Super 8 opener, Rinku was dismissed for a duck at a critical juncture when India desperately needed someone to play a responsible, anchoring innings. In total, he managed just 24 runs from five appearances in this T20 World Cup tournament, which had already opened genuine discussions about his place in the playing eleven.

Sanju Samson Ready to Step Up for India

With Rinku Singh unavailable for the Zimbabwe match, India’s think-tank is now seriously considering bringing Sanju Samson back into the T20 World Cup playing XI. Samson, who had not featured in India’s Super 8 match against South Africa, put in an extraordinary extended net session at Chepauk on the evening of February 24. Multiple reports suggest he could open the batting for India in the Chennai fixture, with one of the current left-handed openers, either Abhishek Sharma or Ishan Kishan potentially moving down the order as a tactical adjustment to the lineup.

Axar Patel’s Expected T20 World Cup Return

Sunil Gavaskar and several other prominent former India players have also strongly advocated for the return of Axar Patel, India’s vice-captain who was controversially dropped for the South Africa Super 8 match a decision widely criticised after India’s shocking batting collapse in Ahmedabad. Axar provides valuable left-arm spin on the Chennai black-soil surface, which traditionally assists spin bowling enormously. He also adds batting depth in the lower middle order that India critically lacked against the South African attack.

India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign is in genuine jeopardy.
