IPL 2026 Auction Strategy: R Ashwin Lists CSK’s Top 3 Targets

The IPL 2026 Auction Strategy for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is poised to undergo a dramatic overhaul following intense speculation about a blockbuster trade. At the center of the storm is a potential swap that could see CSK veteran Ravindra Jadeja move to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in exchange for their captain, Sanju Samson. Amid this high-profile trade buzz, former CSK player R Ashwin has weighed in, shortlisting three key players he believes the five-time champions will aggressively pursue at the next auction to plug crucial gaps.

While there is chatter about Australian all-rounder Cameron Green being a target, Ashwin specifically named three players who could significantly bolster the Super Kings’ line-up, assuming they are released from their current franchises: David Miller, Mohammad Shami, and Rahul Chahar. This aggressive strategy indicates a shift towards securing powerful finishers and experienced Indian bowlers.

Sanju Samson Trade: The End of the Jadeja Era?

The trade rumour involving Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja, also reportedly including Sam Curran, stands to be one of the biggest moves in IPL history. Ashwin, who played for CSK, expressed profound disappointment at the potential exit of Jadeja, stating the move is “very unlike CSK,” a franchise whose identity was built on stability and trust. The sentiments of the fans regarding Jadeja’s potential exit are entirely justified, according to Ashwin, who feels CSK may have “missed a trick.”

The move is seen as a strategic choice for CSK to acquire a long-term captaincy and wicketkeeper-batter option in Samson, a player whose brand identity and top-order role fit the Super Kings’ future plans perfectly. For the Royals, getting a finisher and experienced all-rounder like Jadeja would address their perennial middle-order struggles. Despite the business logic, the emotional angle remains difficult for the massive CSK fanbase to digest, signalling the potential end of the Jadeja era.

CSK’s Priority: Power Hitters and Finisher

Ashwin pointed out that, despite the excitement over the Sanju Samson acquisition, CSK’s biggest tactical need remains in the finishing department. “What did they need? They needed a power hitter and a finisher,” Ashwin stated, noting that teams like RCB are “smiling” having secured players like Tim David and Romario Shepherd for base prices in recent auctions. It is with this finisher role in mind that Ashwin placed David Miller high on CSK’s potential target list. Miller, a destructive middle-order power hitter, would provide the required impetus in the death overs, a role that becomes critical in the post-MS Dhoni era.

Targeting Mohammad Shami and Rahul Chahar

The other two players highlighted by Ashwin address CSK’s need for an experienced Indian pacer and a quality leg-spinner. Mohammad Shami, if released as Ashwin predicts, would offer the Chennai Super Kings a world-class Indian fast-bowling option, providing penetration with the new ball and control in the middle overs. Shami’s immense experience and wicket-taking ability would be an invaluable asset to any team looking to build a stable bowling attack.

Finally, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar was listed as a potential target. A young, yet experienced, Indian wrist-spinner is a highly coveted commodity in the IPL, especially on Chennai’s turning tracks. Chahar’s inclusion would provide a crucial variety in the spin department, adding to the Super Kings’ traditional strength. These calculated targets—Miller for batting firepower, Shami for pace experience, and Chahar for spin variety—show that CSK is planning a strategic rebuild around the core of the IPL 2026 Auction. The focus is clearly on filling the voids that the potential departure of players like Jadeja and Curran will create, ensuring the franchise remains a title contender in the years to come.
