Arsenal Lead Premier League at Christmas, but Can They Hold Off Man City?

Arsenal will spend Christmas Day at the top of the Premier League table, a familiar position for the Gunners in recent years. But with only a slender two-point lead, many will wonder: can Arsenal hold off the relentless challenge of Manchester City to secure their first title since 2004?

Arsenal’s Christmas Day Lead: What Does History Tell Us?

In 17 of the last 33 seasons, the team top of the Premier League at Christmas has gone on to lift the title. However, Arsenal’s record at Christmas has been much bleaker. Despite being top of the table on four previous occasions, they have never gone on to win the league in those seasons. This season marks the third time in four years that Mikel Arteta’s side sits top at Christmas, and Arsenal fans will hope the team’s experience from previous seasons can help them avoid falling short once again.

Arsenal’s position at the top is precarious, with only a two-point lead, one of the smallest Christmas Day leads in recent years. In fact, the only other side to have a smaller lead at this stage in the last 12 seasons was Arsenal themselves in 2021, when they also had a two-point advantage. Historically, teams with such small leads have struggled to maintain them, but there is hope – five of the previous seven teams with a two-point Christmas lead have gone on to win the title, including the last four.

Can Arsenal Break the Title Drought?

Despite their Christmas Day position, history has not been kind to Arsenal. Interestingly, the Gunners have won the Premier League three times without ever leading the league at Christmas. In the 1997-98 season, Arsenal were 13 points behind Manchester United and in sixth place at Christmas, only to go on and win the title. In 2001-02, they were second, three points behind Newcastle, and in 2003-04 they were third, one point behind Manchester United.

The fear for Arsenal fans is the looming presence of Manchester City, the team who has taken full advantage when Arsenal faltered in previous seasons. Manchester City’s squad, led by Pep Guardiola, is filled with experienced Premier League winners who know how to finish a season strong. Arsenal, by contrast, have only Gabriel Jesus as a Premier League winner, having joined from Manchester City, and lack the same level of depth in title-winning experience.

Arsenal’s Edge Over Manchester City

However, this season could be different. Manchester City, while still a dominant force, has shown signs of vulnerability. They have already lost four games this season, compared to Arsenal’s two, and Guardiola himself admitted that his team’s performance level must improve if they are to close the gap on the top spot. “We will be there,” Guardiola said, but acknowledged that City’s aggression and hunger need to return to their best.

Arsenal’s defense has been solid, conceding fewer goals than City, and this could be a key factor in the title race. If Arsenal’s defensive solidity can hold up against City’s potent attack, they may just have enough to stay top and secure the title, despite their small margin at Christmas.

The Relegation Battle: Wolves, Burnley, and West Ham Fight for Survival

At the other end of the table, the relegation battle is heating up. Wolves, Burnley, and West Ham find themselves in serious danger of dropping out of the Premier League, with Wolves currently in the bottom spot and 16 points from safety. Only four teams in Premier League history have survived after being bottom at Christmas, with Wolves themselves managing to escape last season.

Burnley, sitting in second-bottom, are in a better position, as nearly half of the teams in their position at Christmas have managed to stay up. However, only one team in the past eight seasons has done so, with Newcastle’s 2021-22 survival standing as a rare exception.

West Ham, in 18th, will take hope from the fact that the team in 18th place has survived in over two-thirds of seasons, most recently Nottingham Forest last season. While it is unlikely all three teams at the bottom will survive, history suggests that one of them may yet manage to avoid relegation.
