Antim Panghal World Wrestling Championships Medal: Indian Star Wins Second Bronze in Zagreb

Antim Panghal World Wrestling Championships medal win has once again put Indian wrestling on the global stage. The 21-year-old grappler secured her second consecutive World Championship bronze medal after a commanding 9-1 victory over U23 world champion Emma Jonna Denise Malmgren of Sweden in the bronze play-off in Zagreb, Croatia, on Thursday. Her victory ensured that India did not return empty-handed from this year’s prestigious tournament.

Antim Panghal’s Dominant Performance

Displaying a perfect balance of strong defence and measured attack, Antim kept control throughout the bout. Malmgren, known for her aggression, was neutralized by Antim’s tactical composure and counter-attacks. The Indian opened the scoring when Malmgren was penalized for passivity, then executed precise takedowns to maintain a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the closing stages, Antim extended her advantage with a four-pointer to clinch a 9-1 victory and claim her second World Championship bronze.

Resilience After a Challenging Year

After the heartbreak of her early exit and deportation during the 2024 Paris Olympics, Antim faced immense pressure to deliver a strong comeback. Thursday’s triumph not only restored her confidence but also reaffirmed her status as India’s rising star in the 53kg category, a division once dominated by Vinesh Phogat. The young wrestler’s composure under pressure and ability to adapt mid-bout highlighted her maturity at the senior level.

A Record-Breaking Career at 21

At just 21, Antim Panghal has already built an impressive resume. She now holds:

  • Two World Championship bronze medals (2023, 2025)
  • One Asian Games bronze
  • A silver and bronze at Asian Championships
  • Two U20 World titles (2022, 2023)
  • Two Grand Prix gold medals

Only Vinesh Phogat has matched Antim’s feat of winning multiple World Championships medals for India, placing her among an elite group that includes Alka Tomar, Geeta Phogat, Babita Phogat, Pooja Dhanda, Sarita Mor, and Anshu Malik — all of whom have one medal each.

India’s Mixed Campaign at the World Championships

While Antim shone bright, India’s Greco-Roman wrestlers continued to struggle. None of the four men in action on Thursday managed to win a bout. Anil Mor (55kg) suffered a 13-second loss to world number one Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan, while Aman (77kg), Rahul (82kg), and Sonu (130kg) also exited early. Their defeats meant India’s men’s campaign ended without a medal.

Antim Panghal Leads the Way for Indian Wrestling

Antim’s back-to-back World medals reaffirm India’s growing strength in women’s wrestling. Her determination, tactical evolution, and ability to perform under pressure make her a key medal prospect for upcoming events, including the 2026 Asian Games and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. For Indian fans, Antim’s victory offers hope and continuity in a challenging year for the sport.
