Anil Kumble Critiques Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Shot Selection Against South Africa

Yashasvi Jaiswal came under scrutiny after a disappointing dismissal on Day 4 of the ongoing India vs South Africa Test in Guwahati. Former India cricketer and head coach Anil Kumble criticized the young opener’s shot selection, describing it as “went without control” during India’s chase of 549 runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Dismissed by Marco Jansen

Chasing a massive total, India lost two wickets before stumps on Day 2, with both openers, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, dismissed early. Jaiswal fell for 13 runs to South African all-rounder Marco Jansen, edging a short delivery outside off-stump straight to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne. This dismissal marked Jaiswal’s third time being dismissed by Jansen in Test cricket, leaving him with just 42 runs off 73 balls at an average of 14 and a strike rate of 57.53 against the left-arm pacer.

Anil Kumble’s Analysis on ‘Cricket Live’

Speaking on the JioStar show Cricket Live, Anil Kumble praised South Africa’s bowling attack for testing India’s openers. However, he was critical of Jaiswal’s approach. “Great bowling performance by South Africa. I thought they bowled exceptionally well. Maybe if South Africa had declared earlier, India would have been in even deeper trouble. But having said that, it was a poor shot from Yashasvi Jaiswal,” Kumble stated.

He elaborated that Jaiswal attempted his favourite cut shot, a stroke he has often scored runs with, but executed it poorly against Jansen’s short-pitched delivery.

Technical Flaws in Jaiswal’s Shot Execution

Kumble highlighted the technical reasons behind Jaiswal’s dismissal. “Naturally he thought, ‘If it’s short and there’s any width, I’ll go for it.’ But if you look at his footwork, he tends to fall back, which makes him believe there is room when there really isn’t. That’s probably why he went after the ball without control. The transfer of weight has to happen when you play the cut shot. Unfortunately for Jaiswal, the ball took the outside edge and went straight to the wicketkeeper,” Kumble explained.

Jaiswal’s Struggle Against Marco Jansen

Yashasvi Jaiswal has struggled against Marco Jansen in Tests, with his limited runs highlighting the challenge posed by the South African pacer. This recurring dismissal underlines the need for the young opener to adapt his technique and footwork when facing short deliveries from left-arm fast bowlers like Jansen.

Looking Ahead: India’s Batting Challenges

India’s top order faces the critical task of building partnerships while chasing mammoth totals against South Africa. Coaches and former cricketers like Kumble stress the importance of shot selection and controlled aggression to succeed against world-class bowling attacks.

With Yashasvi Jaiswal under the spotlight, India’s batting unit will need to learn from these setbacks to perform consistently in upcoming sessions of the Test series. His performance in the remaining days could be crucial for India’s chances of a historic chase in Guwahati.

Importance of Technique and Experience

Kumble’s critique serves as a reminder that even talented young players must balance flair with technique in high-pressure situations. Improving footwork, timing, and shot selection will be key for Yashasvi Jaiswal and other Indian openers as they aim to overcome South Africa’s formidable bowling lineup.

By focusing on disciplined shot execution and learning from prior dismissals, Jaiswal has an opportunity to convert potential into consistent match-winning performances, ensuring India remains competitive in challenging Test scenarios.
