Ajit Agarkar: Future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in 2027 ODI World Cup “Difficult To Say”

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated at the NDTV World Summit 2025 that no final decision has been made regarding the inclusion of star Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both players, who have already retired from Tests and T20Is, continue to feature in India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia.

Agarkar noted that while the veteran duo remains part of the squad, their participation in every match is not guaranteed due to their stature and past achievements. “They are incredible players, but it is not the forum to harp on about individual players. Two years from now, it is difficult to say what the situation will be,” he said.

He emphasized that younger players may emerge and compete for spots in the India Cricket Team, and performance in upcoming series will not automatically secure a place in the 2027 World Cup. “It is about winning trophies, not just runs. Even if they score three hundreds in the Australia series, it doesn’t guarantee World Cup selection. We will assess the situation as it unfolds,” Agarkar added.

The former India star also highlighted the value of legacy cricketers in the squad, praising their experience and leadership in guiding young talents. “Legacy cricketers have earned their status. Their experience strengthens the side and deserves respect,” he said.

As the cricketing world debates the future of Kohli and Rohit in ODIs, Agarkar’s comments underline that decisions will focus on team balance, performance, and strategy leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
