Arshdeep Singh Fined 15% After 1 Shocking Code Breach in T20 Final

Arshdeep Singh Fined by ICC After Heated Moment in T20 World Cup 2026 Final

The celebrations of India’s historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph were briefly overshadowed by a disciplinary incident involving left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh. Just days after India lifted the trophy in Ahmedabad, the International Cricket Council confirmed that Arshdeep had been fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the high-profile final against New Zealand on March 8.

The incident occurred during a tense phase of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium and quickly became one of the talking points of the final. While it did little to affect the outcome of the game, which India won comfortably by 96 runs, the ICC took swift action to address the on-field behaviour.

Arshdeep Singh Incident That Triggered ICC Action

The controversial moment unfolded during the 11th over of New Zealand’s challenging run chase of 256. Arshdeep Singh had just completed his delivery stride when the ball was played back towards him. In an attempt to create a run-out opportunity, the Indian pacer collected the ball on his follow-through and threw it aggressively at the stumps.

However, the throw struck New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell directly on the pads as he stood outside his crease. The forceful nature of the throw immediately drew attention from players and officials on the field.

Mitchell appeared visibly frustrated by the incident and walked towards Arshdeep in a confrontational manner. Instead of immediately apologising, Arshdeep turned away and began walking back to his bowling mark, which momentarily escalated the tension between the two players.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav quickly intervened, stepping between the players to calm the situation and ensure the match continued without further disruption. On-field umpire Richard Illingworth also spoke briefly to Arshdeep, reminding him of the importance of maintaining discipline during such high-pressure matches.

ICC Code of Conduct Breach Explained

Following a review of the incident, the International Cricket Council confirmed that Arshdeep Singh had breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

This article relates to throwing a ball or any item of cricket equipment at or near another player in a manner that could be considered dangerous or inappropriate during an international match.

The charge was formally laid by the match officials overseeing the final, including on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Allahuddien Paleker, and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.

The sanction was proposed by Andy Pycroft, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. After reviewing the evidence, Arshdeep accepted the charge without contesting it. Because the player admitted the offence, no formal disciplinary hearing was required and the penalty was confirmed quickly by the governing body.

Penalty Details and Demerit Record

Under ICC disciplinary regulations, a Level 1 offence represents the least severe category of code-of-conduct breaches but still carries potential penalties.

Such violations can result in a minimum punishment of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of a 50 percent fine of the player’s match fee, along with the addition of one or two demerit points to the player’s record.

In Arshdeep Singh’s case, the match referee imposed a 15 percent fine of his match fee along with one demerit point. The ICC confirmed that this marks the first disciplinary offence on Arshdeep’s record within the current 24-month monitoring period.

Demerit points remain on a player’s record for two years. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points during that period, they are converted into suspension points that can lead to a ban from international matches.

With only a single demerit point currently on his record, Arshdeep faces no immediate threat of suspension.

Arshdeep Apologises, Harmony Restored

Despite the heated exchange during the match, the situation was quickly resolved after the over concluded.

Arshdeep approached Daryl Mitchell to apologise for the incident, and the two players were later seen shaking hands in a gesture that helped defuse any lingering tension.

A video later shared on New Zealand Cricket’s social media channels showed the Indian bowler offering another apology to Mitchell following the match, with the New Zealand batter accepting the gesture warmly.

Speaking during a light-hearted post-match interaction with commentator Harsha Bhogle, Arshdeep explained the moment with a sense of humour. He suggested that his throw had unintentionally struck Mitchell and emphasised that he had immediately tried to make things right once the situation cooled down.

India’s Historic T20 World Cup 2026 Triumph

The disciplinary episode did little to overshadow what ultimately became one of the most memorable nights in Indian cricket history.

India dominated the T20 World Cup 2026 final, posting a formidable total of 255 for 5 before bowling New Zealand out for 159 in 19 overs, sealing a commanding 96-run victory.

The win delivered India their third T20 World Cup title, following previous triumphs in 2007 and 2024. More significantly, it made India the first team ever to successfully defend the T20 World Cup and the first to win the tournament on home soil.

Under the leadership of coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, the team delivered a remarkable campaign that combined explosive batting, disciplined bowling, and strong leadership throughout the tournament.

While the Arshdeep Singh incident served as a reminder of the intense emotions that accompany high-stakes cricket, it ultimately became only a small footnote in a historic tournament that will be remembered for India’s dominant performance and record-breaking achievement on the world stage.
