Jemimah Rodrigues Set to Lead Delhi Capitals in WPL 2026 – All You Need to Know

Indian women’s cricket star Jemimah Rodrigues is all set to be announced as the captain of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. According to Cricbuzz, the official announcement will be made on Tuesday, marking a new chapter for the Delhi-based franchise.
Delhi Capitals’ New Leadership

Meg Lanning, who had captained the Delhi Capitals in the first three seasons of WPL, has been released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. In a strategic move, the team management has decided to appoint an Indian player as captain for the upcoming season. Delhi Capitals’ team official, Jindal, had confirmed this decision in a mid-auction press conference: “We are very clear we want an Indian as captain. We have our minds made up.”

Jemimah Rodrigues will now take the reins of the team, leading alongside other retained stars like Shafali Verma, Annabel Sutherland (Australia), Marizanne Kapp (South Africa), and U-19 World Cup-winning captain Niki Prasad.

Jemimah Rodrigues’ Form in International Cricket

Jemimah Rodrigues’ appointment as Delhi Capitals’ captain comes at a time when she is in stellar form in international cricket. The star batter continued her excellent run from the Women’s ODI World Cup, where she played a pivotal role in India’s journey to the final. Most recently, she scored an unbeaten half-century in the first match of the five-match Women’s T20I series against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam.

After India’s bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to just 121/6 in 20 overs, Jemimah guided India to victory, scoring 69 not out off 44 balls, as India chased down the target of 122 with 32 balls to spare. Jemimah’s knock featured 10 boundaries and came off just 34 balls, helping her team to a comfortable win.

Key Partnerships and Performance

Jemimah shared a 54-run stand for the second wicket with Smriti Mandhana, who contributed 25 runs off 25 balls, and an unbeaten 55-run partnership with India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur for the third wicket. Rodrigues built her innings with patience, unleashing some elegant shots while running between the wickets with great agility, pushing her partners to keep up the intensity.

Mandhana, who became the first Indian batter to reach 4000 runs in women’s T20I cricket during the match, added to India’s total with four boundaries before being dismissed. Jemimah’s mature innings and her partnership with Harmanpreet ensured that India went 1-0 up in the series, with the team chasing down Sri Lanka’s modest target without much trouble.

Jemimah Rodrigues’ Growing Leadership Role

Jemimah’s rise to the captaincy of the Delhi Capitals further cements her reputation as one of the best players in women’s cricket. Known for her calm demeanor and sharp cricketing mind, Jemimah is expected to bring both skill and leadership to the team as they aim to win their first WPL title in 2026.

Jemimah Rodrigues taking over as captain of the Delhi Capitals marks a significant moment not only for the franchise but also for Indian women’s cricket. Her appointment reflects the growing emphasis on promoting Indian talent in leadership roles within the Women’s Premier League, moving away from the earlier trend of foreign captains. By entrusting the reins to an Indian player, Delhi Capitals aim to build a team that is cohesive, culturally aligned, and capable of executing strategies effectively on and off the field.

Leadership in cricket extends beyond tactical decisions, and Jemimah is well-equipped for the role. Her calmness under pressure, ability to read the game, and excellent communication skills make her an ideal captain. She has consistently demonstrated maturity in high-stakes situations, whether it was anchoring chases in international cricket or building crucial partnerships, as seen in the recent T20I series against Sri Lanka. Her performances inspire confidence in teammates, fostering an environment where players can express themselves freely and perform at their best.

Under Jemimah’s leadership, Delhi Capitals will focus on leveraging the strengths of its squad, which includes explosive batters like Shafali Verma and experienced internationals like Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp. The inclusion of young talents like Niki Prasad ensures a blend of experience and youthful energy, allowing the team to experiment with flexible strategies in the WPL. Jemimah’s leadership will be pivotal in nurturing these emerging players while maintaining a competitive edge against other franchises.
