Dew Factor: India vs South Africa 3rd ODI Preview

Dew Factor in India vs South Africa 3rd ODI The dew factor is set to play a decisive role in the India vs South Africa 3rd ODI, as India prepares to counter South Africa’s explosive batting line-up. With the series level at 1-1, both teams are aiming for victory in a thrilling decider at Visakhapatnam on Saturday. After South Africa chased down a massive 359 in Raipur, Indian assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate revealed the team’s special preparation strategies to tackle the challenging conditions.

How Dew Affects India vs South Africa ODIs

Dew has proven critical in the first two ODIs, with India scoring over 340 runs but failing to defend totals due to the wet outfield. Doeschate explained that the dew factor can impact match outcomes by 10-20%, making bowling with a wet ball particularly difficult. This has allowed South African batsmen to chase big scores with relative ease.

India’s Strategic Preparation Against Dew

To counter dew, the Indian team is practicing with wet balls and exploring adjustments in batting order and timing. “We are doing all the practical prep stuff, guys bowling with wet balls. Again, you know, like setting up our strategy to get a premium score, figuring out how to defend, what is best to bowl with the wet ball when there is dew on the grass,” Doeschate said. The team is also analyzing target scores carefully, aiming to maximize runs in the first innings while factoring in the dew effect.

Score Targets and Match Planning

In both previous ODIs, India set totals above 340 runs, yet South Africa managed a 359-run chase in Raipur. Ten Doeschate noted, “At the start of the first game, we thought 320 was sort of par, and then we put a premium at 350. We thought the game in Raipur was the same. We thought 360, even given the dew coming, was a good effort to get that score.” The team continues to refine strategies for batting first, aiming for scores that are defendable despite the dew factor.

Timing and Dew Considerations

Changing match start times could reduce dew impact, but logistical challenges make it difficult. Doeschate said, “A different start time could bring that effect down a little bit if you started two hours early. That is a solution, but obviously, there are so many moving parts at play in terms of broadcasting. So it is a futile conversation.” Thus, Indian bowlers must adapt to bowling under wet conditions to minimize South Africa’s advantage.

Pressure to Win After Test Defeat

Following a 0-2 Test series loss to South Africa at home, India faces pressure to claim the ODI series. Ten Doeschate emphasized the players’ awareness of their responsibility, stating, “It is a very different set of players, but the guys are very aware of the responsibility of what they are representing. We always want to win, but certainly when a few losses do start stacking up, and performances are below what we expect from ourselves. I think there is a desperation to win the series tomorrow.”
