Ajit Agarkar on Mohammed Shami’s Fitness and Team India Selection

The absence of Mohammed Shami from India’s 2025 tour of England has raised questions among fans and experts alike, especially considering his consistent performances in domestic cricket. However, Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the Indian men’s selection committee, has provided clarity on the matter, stating that fitness concerns were the primary reason for Shami’s exclusion.

Ajit Agarkar Fitness the Key Factor for Shami’s Omission

In an interview at the NDTV World Summit 2025, Agarkar explained that while Shami had been in good form in domestic cricket, his fitness had not reached the required level for an international tour, particularly one as demanding as the series in England. Agarkar stated, “We had planned to include Shami for the England series, but his fitness was not where it needed to be. We’ve been in touch with him multiple times over the last few months, and the selectors felt that he wasn’t fully match-ready.”

Shami, who has been one of India’s most prominent fast bowlers, was notably left out of the squad despite his performances in the Ranji Trophy and the Duleep Trophy, where he played for Bengal. He recently took three wickets in the first innings of Bengal’s match against Uttarakhand in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. Despite his efforts in domestic cricket, Shami struggled to make the cut for the England tour due to concerns over his fitness levels.

Shami’s Frustration and Agarkar’s Response

Shami had voiced his frustration regarding his exclusion from the England squad, claiming that he was fit and match-ready. “Selection isn’t in my hands. If I wasn’t fit, I wouldn’t be playing for Bengal,” Shami said in an interview with PTI, emphasizing that he was fully capable of representing India again on the international stage. His comments suggested some disappointment, as he felt his domestic form should have earned him a spot on the England tour.

Agarkar, however, responded diplomatically, reiterating that fitness is a non-negotiable requirement for international cricket. “If Shami had been fully fit, we would have selected him for the series. We were keen to have him for the Australia Tests too, but unfortunately, his fitness wasn’t up to the required standards at that time,” Agarkar remarked. He acknowledged Shami’s frustration but explained that selection decisions were based on a player’s physical readiness to perform at the highest level.

Shami’s Return to the National Team Remains a Possibility

While Shami was excluded from the England tour, Agarkar was quick to reassure that Shami remains very much in contention for future international selections, provided he proves his fitness. Agarkar made it clear that the selection panel would continue to monitor Shami’s progress during the ongoing domestic season, including his performances in the Ranji Trophy.

“We will continue to watch his progress over the next few months. If he stays fit and continues to perform well, the situation could change,” Agarkar said, hinting that there could still be a path for Shami’s return to the Indian team if he regains full fitness.

Shami, with his experience and proven record, remains a valuable asset for India, and the selectors are keen to bring him back into the fold once his fitness is on par with international standards. His skill set as a fast bowler, especially in challenging conditions, makes him a key player for India’s future campaigns, including the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup and subsequent Test series.

Shami’s Continued Commitment to Domestic Cricket and Fitness

Despite missing out on the England tour, Shami has shown great commitment to his fitness and career. Playing in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, he has continued to put in hard work on the field, ensuring that he stays match-fit and competitive. His performances, although not match-winning in every instance, show that he remains a key player for Bengal and has the potential to make a comeback for India once his fitness is fully restored.

Shami’s efforts to stay in shape have been further supported by his discipline in training, improved fitness routines, and a focus on nutrition. His recent participation in the Yo-Yo and Bronco tests have shown that he has been taking the necessary steps to regain peak physical condition. These tests are crucial indicators for international cricket, and Shami’s results in these assessments will likely play a big role in his return to the national squad.

Agarkar’s Confidence in Shami’s Abilities

Agarkar also reiterated that Shami’s quality as a bowler remains unquestionable. Despite the fitness issues that led to his omission, Agarkar praised Shami’s long-standing contributions to Indian cricket. “A player like Shami, who has proven his worth over the years, is always an asset to the team. His experience and skill are invaluable, and if he’s fit, he will definitely have a role to play for India,” Agarkar affirmed.

India has relied on Shami for some of its most memorable Test victories, and his performances in both home and away conditions have cemented his status as one of the premier fast bowlers in the world. His ability to generate pace, swing, and reverse-swing makes him a dangerous prospect in all formats, and Agarkar’s comments highlight that he still has a future in the national side — provided he can prove his fitness.

Looking Ahead: Shami’s Path to International Cricket

As the calendar moves forward, Shami will continue to feature in domestic competitions, hoping that consistent performances will see him make a return to the Indian squad. The selectors have been clear in stating that the door remains open for him, as long as he can meet the fitness requirements. The 2027 ICC World Cup and several important Test series provide ample opportunities for Shami to make a comeback and contribute to India’s cricketing success on the global stage.

In the meantime, Shami remains focused on his rehabilitation and is determined to earn back his place in India’s cricketing ranks. With time on his side and a wealth of experience, it’s likely that Shami will have another chance to represent his country — provided his fitness improves in the coming months.
